Beaver Aircraft
This was a very different kind of commission than the figurative or wildlife sculptures I usually sculpt. I have been commissioned to sculpt inorganic things before, but they have been props of some sort: a hockey stick, Tonka Truck, toy sailboat, etc. I just goes to show that what people value enough to have memorialized in bronze as a private commission is overwhelmingly the people or animals they love!
I really love the idea behind this one. I was contacted because a client wanted to have her husband’s Beaver float plane sculpted in bronze, taking off from the top of his crypt. It is heading towards the mountains to where he used to fly to his cabin on the lake.
Usually my sculptures don’t have many straight lines, but in this case, an aircraft has to be straight! Quite a bit of study was done for this one as it needed to be representative of the actual Beaver aircraft. It was fun-after much deliberation, we settled on a 6-foot wingspan for size. I had it taking off from the water to lift it up off the crypt as it heads into the great blue yonder.
